Week 11 NHL Fantasy Preview

David Carey – March 28, 2021

“Sniping the Competition” Its the idea that your one step ahead of your opponent, your league and even the sharps of the industry. Fantasy leagues typically come down to very small and seemingly insignificant amounts of point differentials. These narrow separations which divide teams from making/missing the playoffs are decided long before the season ends. Its those who put in a consistent effort who prevail. If you’ve been with us all year we’ve spent plenty of time talking strategy and emphasizing activity. With only 3 full weeks to go before Fantasy playoffs its crucial that you push through to the finish line.

Team Trends

The Capitals are on fire as of late. With only 1 loss in their last 10GP and players like Alex Ovechkin scoring 10G during that stretch its a time we took a harder look at the success that could be coming their way in the playoffs. The Capitals, Avalanche, Wild, Hurricanes, Oilers and Penguins are all playing their best hockey of the year and look like they are into playoff form already. Keep an eye on this list as the season comes to a close, its likely that rising tides float all the boats in terms of Fantasy production.

Buffalo is now 0-9-1 in their last 10 GP and have lost 17 straight games. At this point we’ve got to lower our expectations for the remainder of the year and understand that Buffalo is stuck worse than the ‘Ever Given’ in the Suez Canal . With Eric Staal getting traded to Montreal and the Sabres front office listening to offers on Taylor Hall its a dark time to be watching Sabres hockey. Philly and St Louis have recently jumped on this list and its largely in part to the pucks that they can’t seem to keep out of their net. For two teams who were widely regarded as being capable of a solid run in the playoffs its surprising to see such a cold streak just ahead of the NHL Trade deadline.

COVID-19 News + Notes

The big news this week came just an hour ahead of puck drop Monday night between the Edmonton Oilers and Montreal Canadiens when it was announced that the Canadiens had multiple players with positive test results leading to games being postponed through March 28th. Here is an update of the players in the NHL’s COVID protocol as of March 27th:

  • Anaheim Ducks – Volkov
  • Boston Bruins – DeBrusk, Kuraly, Marchand
  • Minnesota Wild– Zach Parise
  • Montreal Canadiens – Armia, Kotkaniemi
  • NY Rangers – Howden
  • Pittsburgh Penguins – Jankowski
  • Vancouver Canucks – Boyd

It was the first COVID related postponement in the NHL North division in so far this season and it took a big impact on the schedule. Montreal had all 4 of its games postponed and Edmonton had 3.

Its worth consideration that with players who are traded from American clubs to Canadian ones the mandator COVID-19 protocol period has been reduced from 14 days to 7.

Games per day

Week 11 won’t be a hard one to roster your best lineup as only Saturday is scheduled for over 9 games.

  • Monday – 7
  • Tuesday – 7
  • Wednesday – 6
  • Thursday – 9
  • Friday – 6
  • Saturday – 12
  • Sunday – 7

Teams playing 4 games this week

First off, no team plays 5x on the week so you don’t have to race towards adding players from a specific team in that regard. Next, of the 16 teams that are scheduled for 4GP on the week Calgary, Toronto and Winnipeg have a day off in between each game meaning that they could feature only 1 goaltender over the course of the entire week: Calgary, Toronto and Winnipeg.

  • Buffalo Sabres
  • Calgary Flames
  • Carolina Hurricanes
  • Colorado Avalanche
  • Columbus Blue Jackets
  • Dallas Stars
  • Detroit Red Wings
  • Florida Panthers
  • LA Kings
  • Minnesota Wild
  • San Jose Sharks
  • Tampa Bay Lightning
  • Toronto Maple Leafs
  • Vegas Golden Knights
  • Washington Capitals
  • Winnipeg Jets

Teams playing 2 games this week

The Blues are going to have plenty of players dropped early on in the week as they don’t play until Fri/Sat and both of those games comes @ Colorado. On top of being a quiet week, these will be touch matchups for St Louis who is 2-5-3 in their last 10GP.

  • St Louis Blues
  • Ottawa Senators
  • Montreal Canadiens

Consider checking your roster for some of the fringe players you made have added from these teams over the past two weeks. This a time where they will surely be out produced on the week by most of the top names on the Free Agent List.

  • The blues are hitting a late season slump and outside of 2 wins @ SJ have dropped 8 of their last 10 GP

Alex Tuch (LW,RW) VGK – 38% Owned

  • Tuch hasn’t done much for VGK lately, only 1 A in his last 6GP
  • He is no longer playing in the top 6 FWD group
  • This is the definition of a streaming player who seems to yearly see hot streaks and cold streaks

Stats Central

After talking about the heavy hitters around the NHL last week we want to use the same train of thought here and show you the top 10 players in the NHL in blocked shots. Of this group you are likely able to add and drop 8+ players with the intent of streaming when needed for a few games. Of this group Alec Martinez – 62% Owned is a strong add while Pietrangelo is out of action. Martinez is also a +14 on the year and averages 23:00 min per game.

Lopsided Matchups

Last week we recommended you targeted against Buffalo and Philadelphia. Neither team disappointed us on the week and are likely to be good teams to target against throughout the rest of the year. This week we want to point out:

  1. Colorado Avalanche vs St Louis Blues: As touched on previously in this article, St Louis is going through a cold stretch which has seen them lose 8 of their last 10 games. Now with 4 days ahead of their back to back in Colorado St Louis looks like they are at risk of extending their skid even further.
  2. Columbus Blue Jackets @ Tampa Bay Lightning: Columbus has lost 4 games in a row and have been outscored 14-5 during that stretch. Patrik Laine has been irrelevant over their past 10 games where he has tallied a mere 4pts and 20 SOG. Their inability to score of late is going to make Tampa Bay a tall order. I look for 2 wins from Tampa Bay somewhere in the neighborhood of 4-1.

Fantasy Tip of the week

Know you league’s playoff format and begin looking at your schedules for those weeks!

Week 14 Schedule Week 15 Schedule Week 16 Schedule

In a standard H2H format, week’s 14,15 and 16 will be the playoff rounds. Have a look at the links above to see the games per week listed from www.dailyfaceoff.com and see how your fantasy roster will stack up over the course of those weeks. If you’re expecting to be playing during the first round playoffs its helpful to be aware that both EDM and VGK only play 2x that week. And although its likely that some postponed games from mid season will find themselves fit in to those gaps you wouldn’t want to be going blindly into that round of the playoffs having 4+ players on your roster from those respective teams.
