Justin Rosser- April 11, 2021
Week 13 is upon our NHL Fantasy seasons soon and we need to be prepared for all situations.
Do you need a big win to make the cut? Battle for the top seeds in standings and retain one of the BYE’s for the first round of playoffs? Or just want to be the highest scoring team for some extra $MOOLA$.
As week 12 comes to a close, we need to take every advantage to give us the best possible finishes and maybe find a playoff stud in the free agent market. I will be talking about some players with more games played to get maximum potential points, combined with some sneaky players that are red hot, directed towards week 13 and possibly more.
Teams with 4 games week 13:
Anaheim, Boston, Buffalo, Colorado, Los Angeles, Minnesota, Montreal, New Jersey, New York Rangers, Philadelphia, San Jose, Toronto, Vegas, Washington, Winnipeg.
Kevin Fiala (LW, RW) MIN: 73% Rostered
Fiala was a player I was so high on before the season started, he always shoots a ton and when it starts turning into points, it helps turn your weekly outcomes into wins. Around the time of year when he got that 3 game suspension, he cooled right off and everyone dropped him, but now he’s back!
In his last 7 games he has compiled a healthy 5 G and 6 A, 6 of those points on the PP. My favorite part about Fiala, is that he gets so many shots, in the last 7 games he has 33 shots on net, that’s an average of 4.7 per game.
He has 4 games next week and if the hot hand continues, we could see a nice addition just before playoffs.
UPDATE NOTE: Fiala sat out Saturday night with an upper body injury, make sure to monitor and check for updates on Sunday before adding him!
Craig Smith (RW) BOS: 13% Rostered
Craig Smith is one of my favorite adds right now and with 4 games next week it’s a fantastic play. Recently the Bruins moved Craig Smith up to line 1 to play with Brad Marchand and Patrice Bergeron and it has paid off with flying colors.
Only 13% owned in Yahoo leagues, he is surely available. Now playing on the Bruins top line, he also has a place on the Power Play line 2, positioned at the point. In his last 9 games, he has 2 G and 9 A and a +8 rating; if he stays on the top line, I don’t see too much of a decline in points for the rest of season(ROS). Also in those last 9 games he has 19 SOG and 12 hits, so he is no slouch in the extra categories.
This is a play that could prove valuable throughout playoffs for anyone, just remember to monitor his current line as that is detrimental to his value.
Jacob Trouba (D) NYR: 44% Rostered
This add is for all the leagues with accessory stats included.
Currently playing on New York’s second pairing d-line and on their second PP unit, he has the potential in the offensive stats categories, but that is still sparse at the moment.
You are not adding Trouba to get you goals or assists, he is helping you get all the dirty work points. Just for reference, in his last 12 games played, he has 34 hits and 28 blocked shots. He is like having ranch with your pizza, it’s not essential but it sure makes it better!
Remember the opportunity for points will come and could get hot in that department as well, playing every game over 21:00 in ice time, the more you’re out there, the better opportunity you will have to get points.
Jared McCann (C, LW) PIT: 38% Rostered
Mr. Powerplay points, taking advantage of a Malkin lower body injury, McCann has stepped in admirably.
Centering the Penguins second line and also centering their top PP line, he has so much opportunity to shine and shine he has. In his last 9 games he has 6 G and 4 A, with 7 of those points on the PP.
McCann is fantastic in points only leagues as he is not much of a hitting player and his blocked shots numbers are essentially non-existent. McCann is the only player I have chosen that does not have 4 games played next week, but he does have 3, which are on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday; so possibly look to add him Wednesday/Thursday (depending on add system) for maximum exposure.
NOTE: I would definitely watch Malkin’s injury status while owning McCann and see where they place him when Evgeni returns to the lineup, if you end up keeping him for longer than week 13.
William Karlsson (C) VGK: 58% Rostered
William Karlsson is a model of the “boom or bust” or “streaky” kind of players, well YOU could be the beneficiary of a streaky boom cycle. In all reality, Karlsson has put together a fairly solid 2021 campaign.
Karlsson plays on line 2 for the Vegas Golden Knights and on their PP2 line. In Karlsson’s last 2 weeks (12 games) he has compiled 4 G and 8 A with a +4 and 36 SOG, pretty solid numbers.
If you need an offensive spark from a 58% rostered Center, then William might be of service for you, at least for the final week of the season. Just don’t linger with him on your roster if you find he has gone the whole week without any points, remember… streaky.
Pavel Zacha (C, LW): 12% Rostered
As sellers nearing the trade deadline, the Devils moved on from Kyle Palmieri and Travis Zajac, which means others will be leaned on more heavily for ROS; enter Pavel Zacha.
Only 12% rostered in Yahoo leagues, he has begun a bit of a heater, with 3 G and 3 A in his last 4 games and has played around the 19:00 mark for TOI. In those last 4 games he is a +3 and has 3 PPP, not to mention he has 19 SOG in that time frame.
He plays center on line 2 and left wing on their PP1, so opportunity is there, why not get on a player who is hot with 4 games next week. The best part about it, is you can feel comfortable adding him then dropping him after the week is over, unless he keeps these insane numbers rolling, then you might have just stolen grandmas pie that was cooling on the windowsill.
GOOD LUCK to everyone who the Marksmen may have assisted in any way this season. We hope you bring home the trophy and be sure to check in during playoffs for some potential weekly guys to get you to the championship!
